BPA and drink bottles - is it just a marketing gimmick?

We all drink water, litres and litres of it. We store it in bottles,  it gets  transported, taken to the park, left in the car, shared, throw, bumped and scratched. So which kind of bottles if safe when treated this way? Well, definitely not plastic it seems, BPA free or not.

BPA is released from plastic when it is damaged or heated – thrown, bumped, scratched, left in the car or taken to the park. So we all decide to buy BPA, but what else leaches? Is this stuff safe?   Endrocrine dispruptors and  oestrogen are well researched substance that have negative effects. The question is - What else is in it??

When Sakura was born at 34 weeks, she spent 3 weeks in the special car nursery. She was too young to have the sucking reflex, so all feeds (breastmilk or formula) were given by bottle or tube.  She was seen every day by  paediatrician who was adamant that all milk be stored in glass only. Glass is inert and doesn’t change it structure.

On a tangent, he also refused to use the hospital favourite – Milton steriliser. He said we’ve been bleaching our baby for decades. How lucky to get him! He said to wash through in warm soapy water  (just just any detergent of course), rinse all soap of, them rinse again in filtered, boiled water to get any ‘unsterile’ matter off. Unfortunately he offered no solution for the teats or the dummies.

Of course glass is very breakable, but the market is full of rubber covers (that don’t come in contact with the liquids), metal sippy cups, or just plain old glass cup at the table. Serve and store food in metal or glass and only use metal spoon. They don’t cut gums cause babies don’t chew on them! How many babies have you seen chewing on plastic spoons, releasing any number of unknow chemicals.

So thats my gripe about plastic, without even getting started on the pacific gyre. I don’t believe any plastic is safe, and along with the environmental impact of production and disposal, I’m definately inclined to look for any alternatives out there.
